Medicare Part B

Part B is Medical insurance that helps pay for doctors’ services, some preventive services, and many other medical services and supplies that are not covered by hospital insurance. If you have Part B, you pay a Part B premium each month that comes out of your Social Security benefits.

In general, Part B covers:

  • Medically-necessary services — Services or supplies that are needed to diagnose or treat your medical condition and that meet accepted standards of medical practice.
  • Preventive services — Health care to prevent illness (like the flu) or detect it at an early stage, when treatment is most likely to work best. Click here for a list of preventive services available at
It is important for you to understand that Medicare does not cover everything, and it does not pay the total cost for most services or supplies that are covered.
